| Denial-of-Service Attacks on Banks Increase |
| 2006-03-09 16:40:45 |
Among the more alarming statistics buried in Symantec's 120-page, twice-yearly Internet Security Threat Report were numbers detailing a 50 percent increase in denial-of-service attacks to an average of 1,402 per day in the six months ended Dec. 31, 2005. Financial institutions were the most popular targets, rising to the top from a third-place rank in the first half of 2005. Phishing attacks also increased dramatically, with 7.92 million daily attempts in the second half of 2005, versus 5.7 million a day in the first half of the year. And though much of the talk these days is about zero-day attacks, Symantec found that on average it takes about six days after vulnerability is disclosed for exploit code to appear. The average time it takes vendors to supply a patch: 49 days.
